History
There has been a long history of football in Dollar, which has had it's ups and downs.
As far back as can be remembered, around the 1920's, locals can remember Dollar Glen FC and Dollar United FC performing their heroics at The Market Park. Donald McNair, Hugh Stenhouse and Nimmo Ramsay were among those who graced the pitch.
Around 1944 The Market Park was used as an Army training camp. It was home to The Royal Artillery at first, then the Armoured Brigade Attachment also known by locals as The Phantoms.
Dollar Youth Club were the club to first use the park after the war, after it had taken the MOD what seemed like an eternity, to sort the park.Among those who played for 'the youthie' were Bob Beveridge, Ian (Tweet) Inglis and George Ramsay.
In the 60's and 70's. The Youth Club, Strathallan Hotel and The Castle Campbell Hotel all used The Market Park. Starring for these sides were players like Alan (Duffy) McGrouther, Bobby (Smuff) Herd, Dougie Blackie and Grant O'Neil. What a team!
In the 80's and early 90's, the main users of The Market Park were Strathdevon FC, who played in the Central Schools League. There were only a couple of stand out years for the team with the last one seeing the team reach the semi finals of the Central Schools League. Players included Neil Herd, Richard Laing and Kevin Mitchell.
The Pitch was bulldozed in 1994 to make way for a hastily planned Civic Centre, which was and still is inadequate. The pitch will always be remembered in the latter years for the mountainous slope running from one goal to the other.
Unfortunately, Dollar's latest team, Dollar Glen FC (Named after the side from the 20's) have to play outside Dollar as the Council still have not come up with the goods. The team have two sides, under 14's and an adult team. Highlights for 'The Glen' include winning the League Cup in 1999 and visiting many tournaments in countries such as Belgium, Holland and England. Players from Dollar who have played for Dollar Glen FC include Keith Mitchell, Craig Inglis and Tom Morgan.
There are plans for a cemetery and a football pitch to be built along sidenew housing at Lovers Loan but with the current economic crisis it could be a few years down the line.
The Council would not try this with any other town. 15 years without a ball kicked.
